Description

Lithograph with stencilled colour.

W. Hughes for George Philip and Son, London and Liverpool. [not dated], c. 1860.

Image size: 500 x 305mm - 19 5/8 x 12", plus small margins.

The map itself is in fairly good condition. It is however trimmed from a larger sheet this being approximately half, hence the title 'POLY[NESIA]' at top right. Borders to the right-hand and bottom margins have been added; small tears to left margin have been reinforced from the rear. There is a repaired loss to the bottom left-hand corner, well repaired, but visible. Sold with 'all faults'.

The map shows nine provinces in the North and South Islands. This was the case between 1853 and 1876, which corresponds with the manuscript note on the rear with estimates a date of c. 1860. The main habitations and something of the topography is clearly delineated. There are three insets to the map: 'Norfolk and Philip Islands' are shown at top right; An 'Enlarged Map of AUKLAND and the Adjacent Country' at the left; An 'Enlarged Plan of THE COUNTRY ROUND DUNEDIN and the Eastern Portion of the OTAGO GOLD-FIELDS' at bottom right. Also shown: a LIST OF NATIVE TRIBES.

A scarce survivor!
