Wilfrid Williams Ball (1853-1916) was a water-colourist and etcher of some repute. Much admired by James Whistler, his work was often exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1877 and 1903. According to the critic C. Lewis Hind his success lay in "anability to offer "serenely pastoral and picturesque views of England that people wanted to hang on their walls". Long Reach is a stretch of the River Thames that lies between Purfleet and Greenhithe.
