Thomas Moule (1784-1851) was originally a London bookseller. His interest in heraldry and cartography resulted in him publishing a much-admired series of detailed and decorative English county maps.

Moule’s maps, with their ornamental borders, armorials and vignettes depicting the notable architectural and topographical features of each county are among the last in the tradition of decorated English county maps. They enjoyed a relatively long publication period: first appearing in 1830 these were republished circa 1845. They manage therefore to show a combination of antiquarianism and the new developments that characterised the railway age.
