Description

Copper engraving with original outline (water)colour.

Published by H[erman] Moll, Geographer, 1729.

Image size: 8 x 10 3/4" - 204 x 275mm.

Sheet size: 9 x 13" approx. - 230 x 330mm approx.

In generally good condition: some (barely evident) staining to the left-hand side; minor wrinkling to right-hand border; tiny surface puncture near Lat. 35 / 'Sholes of Hatteras'. 'No 58', in manuscript at top right corner.

The map shows North and South Carolina and the northern part of Florida; the coastal habitations are shown in some detail, from the Bay of Chesapeake in the north to Fort St Augustin in the south, the rivers and mountains ranges as well as names and locations of native settlements. A dividing line is clearly marked, denoted as: 'Limit of King Charles ye II Granted to ye Present Proprietors of Carolina in 1663". A note explains: "The English claim the Property of Carolina from Lat. 29 &c. Degrees as part of Cabot's Discoveries who set out from Bristol in 1498 ... but did not take Possession of that Country tie King Charles II's time in 1663 who Granted a Patent to divers Persons to plant all the Territories within the North Lat. of 31 to 36 Deg. and so west in a direct line to the South Sea"
