Description

Copper engraving (by George Wigzell) with original wash and outline colour.

Published, London, by Laurie & Whittle, No 53, Fleet St., "As the Act directs", 12th May 1800.

Sheet size: 20 3/4 x 41 7/8" - 527 x 1065mm.

Image size: 20 3/8 x 41' - 518 x 1040mm.

In generally good to very good condition throughout; trimmed (as original) close to borders; two vertical folds, as issued; fold at centre left reinforced at rear with conservation tape; one small tear (south-west Devon) mended at rear with conservation tape. The lighthouse in the vignette to the left-hand of the title oddly erased. Colour, original, still bright and vibrant.

A wonderful chary of 'the Channel of old England'. Two main compass roses give relative directions and distances to landfall; the REMARKS (see detail) show the Depth of Water at Low Tide in fathoms ... the time of High Tide ... and the Direction of Currents. Also given as an aid to navigation are the compositions of the various sea-bottoms through the Channel: "White and yellow Rough Sand with glittering Specks", "Oozy red sand with Scollops", etc. To the east of the Isles of Scilly lies a warning to others: "A sunken Rock on which Capt Thompson of the Betty struck, 2pm Nov 17th 1775."
