A Map of Essex 1797

Description

Copper engraving, Published by John Stockdale, Piccadilly 1797.

Image size: 420mm x 525mm approx., plus margins.

Very good, clean condition, pressed folds, small, repaired tear within left platemark and extra margin added.

This scarce map was included in The History of London and its Environs containing An Account of the Origin of the City...To its Present State of Commercial Greatness… Likewise an Account of all the Towns, Villages and Country within Twenty Five Miles of London. Printed for John Stockdale, Piccadilly by S. Goswell, Little Queen St, Holborn 1811. This finely engraved copper plate is a classic example of Stockdale’s style. Whilst without the elaborate decoration and embellishment of maps from the previous Century its clarity and accuracy is also balanced with a simple grace and elegance.
