This glimpse of bygone Brighton was almost certainly drawn from life and by an accomplished hand. Emanuel, a painter, illustrator, writer and art critic was trained at the Slade and taught etching at Central School, London. The view shows what was once Unicorn Yard, one time barracks to the local militia situated behind the hostelry in North Street. It then became a busy stable for local carriers before its demolition to make way for The Regent Cinema in 1920.
