Generally very good condition throughout.
Nicholson (1872-1949) was paid the princely sum of £5.00 by Heinemann for each woodcut and a further sixpence for colouring those in the De luxe edition (of which he is said to have been capable of finishing thirty to forty a day). The first edition of the Popular series were sold out by 1 January 1898. Nicholson's Zoologist is a revision of his original image. He sits holding a text book open at a page showing the skeleton of a horse, but looking out as if the viewer has disturbed his study.
