This image depicts the last tumbril, which left the Conciergerie (the former royal palace and prison) on 27 July 1794. Proceeding up the Rue St. Antoine the escorts were attacked by bystanders who tried to liberate the condemed passengers. The National Guard however thwarted their attempts using extreme violence against the crowd.
