Royal Hospital, Greenwich
Hand coloured wood engraving, a late nineteenth century impression of a print originally published in The Penny Magazine, 1833.
Image size: 4 1/2" x 6"
Excellent condition throughout with particularly attractive and subtle colouring.
A jolly print whose pleasing perspective embraces the colonnades and domes of both the Chapel and Painted Hall, with seagulls soaring overhead. The lamp standard still remains in Grand Square but the chains and bollards (upturned cannon topped with balls) have now vanished, as have the wonderfully squat Greenwich Pensioners, here depicted as stout as rum barrels.
