Western Hemisphere

Copper engraving with contemporary hand colour. Drawn and engraved by Neele for Thomson's New General Atlas, 1815.

Diameter of image 19 1/2" plus title and margins.

Very good condition throughout. Recently professionally cleaned and conserved.

An impressive map of the Western Hemisphere predominantly showing the continent of North and South America, the islands of the Pacific Ocean and New Zealand. The various voyages of discovery are clearly indicated, most notably those of Captain Cook (reaching as far south as the "Vast Mount[ain]s of Ice"), as well of those of M. de la Perouse, and Vancouver among others.

The colouring has lost its original brilliance, resulting in an unexpected alteration in the pigment, which is particularly noticeable in the oceans. The pleasing effect of this transformation gives the map an intangible quality that greatly enhances its antique aspect, and presents an appearance of the mellow patination of a period globe.
