The London Guide…of the Cities of London & Westminster & The Borough of Southwark, with its New Buildings to the Year of 1768.
Copper engraving by J. Ellis with early hand-colour. Printed for Published by Carrington Bowles, Map & Printseller in St Paul’s Church Yard, London, circa 1768.
Plate size: 15 1/2” x 21” plus margins.
Condition fair to good, previously laid on board. Laid onto card with well-repaired tear encroaching into right of map, and another smaller in table below. Other minor damage to margins. The curious autumnal colouring appears to be the result of discoloration with age, though it lends a certain charm to the piece. Certain original areas of colour remain in the parks and fields. Below the map is a table of references to 103 churches and 58 principal buildings, showing their situation in the above plan.
The extent shown is Sadler’s Wells, Shadwell, Newington Butts, Hyde Park. A beautiful, cunningly engraved and scarce map, not recorded by Darlington & Howgego.
