MAP of the ANCIENT BRITONS of SOUTH BRITAIN, According to Ptolome

Copper engraving with original hand colour; drawn, engraved and published by John Andrews, August 12th 1797, as Plate VII of John Stockdale's, Geographical Atlas of England, 1809.

Image size: 13 1/8" x 10 1/8" plus generous borders.

Generally good condition - a tiny inkblot in the lower margin and a pencil manuscript addition ('8') outside the image at top right.

This map shows the lie of the land of pre-Roman 'England' somewhere between 500BC and 55AD, marking the 'poleis' - habitations - and distribution of the tribes of the country.  Ptolemy was writing in the middle of the 2nd century, though many of his sources were much more ancient. . Scarce.
