Sailor's Valentine
An arrangement of shells incoporating the motto "I LOVE YOU", set within an octagonal box frame. Valentines such as these originally appeared in the nineteenth century and were reputedly made by sailors as love tokens for their sweethearts, although the prosiac reality is that they were in fact purchased from a shop in Barbados. This example is of uncertain vintage, though probably dates from the early twentieth century.
